Basement design can do so much for your home. If a basement has the right design, it can add extra space for you and your family to use. Having a basement, and also making sure you have incorporated the right basement design for your home, the extra space can be used for a multitude of uses – extra bedrooms, game room, home office, anything that you want it to be.
There are some things you do need to think about when it comes to a basement design. What is the point of coming up with a great basement design for you and your home if essentially it will not work for you in the long run? There are some issues that you will want to think about.
Dark paint and/or dark paneling
Using dark colors for walls in your basement design might make you or another person feel like they are going into a dungeon when going into the basement. Basements do not normally get a lot of natural sunlight, so you might want to stick to lighter colors for the walls and floor.
Not enough overhead Lighting
Again, since basements do not normally get a lot of natural lighting, you might want to make sure your basement design has plenty of overhead lights so the basement is not so dark when you are trying to enjoy that area.
For a basement design, also remember to have plenty of electrical outlets.
Sealing off the ceiling
If your basement design calls for sealing off the ceiling, consider this, are you going to be able to easily get up into the ceiling in case there is a wiring problem, or an issue with the pipes in your home?
Certain types of flooring do better in basement design then others. Traditional hardwood floors can be a bad choice, especially since basements can have high humidity levels. Carpeting a basement floor is not a good choice to make either,. If the basement happens to get flooded, the carpet can be very hard to dry out. Engineered hardwoods are okay for basements. Vinyl tiles are a great choice since vinyl is easy to maintain and care for.
Protect Your Investment
One of the last things to consider when it comes to a basement design is waterproofing. Why are you going to go through all the trouble of designing a great basement, to then have it damaged by a water problem? Have a qualified waterproofing professional come out and waterproof your basement before you have a problem with a water issue, and before you spend all the time and money remodeling your basement.
